Why placeholder text exists

Put real copy into an unfinished design and everyone reads it instead of looking at the design. Put obviously fake text in and attention goes where you wanted it — to spacing, hierarchy and rhythm.

Lorem ipsum works because it looks like language without being any language. It has roughly the word-length distribution of English, so a block of it occupies about the space real copy will.

Where it comes from

It is scrambled Latin, taken from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it since the 1500s. The familiar opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" — is a fragment of a longer word, dolorem, cut mid-way, which is why it is not quite real Latin.

When not to use it

User testing — people cannot judge a page they cannot read.
Client sign-off — approving a layout full of Latin approves nothing about the message.
Anything that might ship — lorem ipsum reaching production is common enough to be a running joke, and it is always embarrassing.

Use it to test shape. Replace it before anyone has to judge meaning.
