Convert a CGPA into a percentage or a percentage back into CGPA, using the multiplier your board or university applies.
Most Indian boards and universities convert with a single multiplier:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
So a CGPA of 8.5 becomes 80.75%. Going the other way, divide instead: 80.75 ÷ 9.5 gives 8.5 back.
The 9.5 comes from CBSE, which derived it from the average performance of students across several years. It is a convention rather than a law of nature, which is why the multiplier is editable here.
Some universities use 10, some subtract a constant, and some publish a conversion table instead of a formula. VTU, Anna University and several autonomous colleges each have their own rule.
Check the rule your own institution publishes before quoting a converted figure on an application. If they give a multiplier, put it in the box and the conversion follows it. If they give a table, the table wins over any formula.
